Brockway Area Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration

In July 2009, the Brockway Area Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Committee will hold its 43rd annual Brockway Area Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration. Today, as in previous years, the Committee still maintains its original mission to coordinate a traditional celebration that emphasizes wholesome family fun while actively instilling patriotism, history, and cultural well being.

The Brockway Area Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration inadvertently began as the result of one local farmer and his family annually displaying fireworks at their farm just outside the town of Brockway. This firework display was so grand that it could be seen throughout town. Every year more and more families were awestruck by the fabulous firework display as they watched with anticipation. As this one family’s firework display grew with popularity so did its crowd of bystanders. Finally, the idea emerged from a group of local citizens to organize a community-wide patriotic celebration to be held in Brockway on July 4th. This collective group of volunteers became known as the Brockway Area Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Committee. On May 8, 1967, the Brockway Area Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration officially became incorporated as a 501 c3 nonprofit organization. Today, the Brockway Area Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration remains the largest non-carnival, family-oriented event of its kind in all of Western Pennsylvania. The celebration combines a collaborative medley of events including a patriotic program, art and quilt display, Miss Brockway Fourth of July pageant which is a preliminary pageant to the Miss Pennsylvania and Miss America pageants, car show, craft exhibition, a variety of educational family entertainment, musical performances, children’s games, fishing contest, sporting competitions, concessions by local non-profit fundraising organizations, parade, and spectacular fireworks.

Over the years, the existence of the Brockway Area Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Committee and Celebration primarily remains active due to the devotion of time, talent, and dedication of its volunteers who are an integral part in the success of this celebration. In addition, recognition goes to the generous community and corporate donations that also allow the Committee to keep this weeklong celebration completely free of charge to the public.
