The Hanover Chili Cook Off has become one of the largest chili cooking competitions east of the Mississippi River. Yes, that’s right, according to the Chili Appreciation Society, International (CASI), we’re number one! Last year more than 70 chili cooks and nearly 7,000 chili tasters helped to raise over $58,500 for local charities. These proceeds were donated to three local nonprofit organizations and Hanover’s Guthrie Memorial Library. This CASI (chili.org) sanctioned event is a family oriented day of fun, food and music with Watson the Magician and Randini the Remarkable Juggler roving the field. Two local bands start the musical entertainment, which will be highlighted by another appearance of the Kelly Bell Band from Baltimore and the crowning of the Pennsylvania State Chili Champion.
Chilis are judged by CASI standards. There are also `open` chili and salsa competitions. Chili cooks are also awarded prizes for booth presentation and creativity. Numerous food and beverage vendors will be in place, so you are asked to please leave your pets at home.
Chili fans and cooks alike plan their holiday around this Labor Day Sunday happening. Last year, Dana Plochek’s showed off her 2006 Terlingua International Chili Championship winning `Lady Bug Chili` along with local favorites the `Pirates of the Chilibean` and genuine `Hillbilly Chili.` There is much more than pride and a trophy at stake here. The winner of the Pennsylvania State Chili Championship, as well as the 2nd and 3rd place PA residents, will receive an automatic entry invitation to the `Super Bowl` of chili, the Terlingua International Championship in Terlingua, Texas.
Purchase advance tickets at KClinger’s Tavern in Hanover or The H.A.R.T. Center in New Oxford. No coolers, alcohol or pets may be brought onto the Cook Off grounds. Volunteer positions are available.
